How Parents and Familes Can Help

  • Encourage regular handwashing
  • Encourage your child to cover his or her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • Watch for flu symptoms in your child including fever, cough, and sore throat. Keep your child home until at least 24 hours after symptoms go away.
  • Contact your child's school to report if your child has been diagnosed with the flu or if you are keeping your child home with flu-like symptoms
  • Consider flu vaccination
  • Make sure your child's school has current emergency contact information in the event he or she becomes ill during the school day

What the Schools are Doing

  • Working closely with the Crawford County Health Department on monitoring and prevention of flu
  • Providing instruction to younger students on correct handwashing technique
  • Contacting parents immediately when their child exhibits flu symptoms at school
  • Providing large hand sanitizer pumps throughout the school buildings
  • Wiping down hard surfaces in classrooms daily with disinfectant
  • Making spray bottles of disinfectant available for use on surfaces between classes during the day

11/2/09 - The rate of absence due to illness in the district has fallen to 7% district-wide with NMS and RHS showing significant improvement over the last two weeks. CCHD is conducting another H1N1 vaccination clinic on Wednesday, November 4 from 4:00-8:00 at Nuttall Middle School.

10/22/09 - Many Crawford County residents took advantage of the H1N1 Vaccination Clinic provided by CCHD last night at the Community Center. An additional clinic has been scheduled for next Monday. Please see the links at the top of this page for additional information. Our rate of absence due to illness in the school district has risen slightly to about 8%. We very much appreciate the cooperation families and health care providers have shown in helping us contain the spread of flu.

10/15/09 - Public health officials are confirming that there are cases of Type A Influenza and H1N1 Flu in Crawford County. We have had students in the school district experiencing flu symptoms. Our rate of absence due to illness on 10/15/09 was 6%. This is not an unusually high number for this time of year. However, both the seasonal flu and the H1N1 flu will undoubtedly impact our schools and community more significantly at some point in the coming weeks and months. With your help and support we can minimize the effect on our students' health and education. This web page will be updated as any new information or resources are available.
